The right team starts with a good Support Coordinator.

Support coordinator

As a disability supports business, we know the importance of structure and more importantly the right team around you to achieve your individual goals. With this experience supporting families with a disability, we can’t emphasize enough the importance of having a reliable and accountable support coordinator (also known as COS – Coordination of supports). Having the right one on board as part of your team is essential to the future success of your goals.

So what is a support coordinator?

A Support Coordinator works with individuals to formalize a support plan and help them to engage in different support which they can assist in working out a strategy for you. The aim of a Support Coordinator is to build capacity in different individuals, such as students, the elderly, those with a disability, or people with mental health issues. Support coordination assists NDIS Participants to implement the supports in your NDIS plan, including informal, mainstream, community, and funded supports.

Good support coordinators are generally outside thinkers working to solve individual problems when presented. They are innovative and reliable, great communicators and are able to assist when you are confused and require help. They are generally the first line of contact when you receive your NDIS plan, and will assist with connecting you with the right supports required for you, this may include referrals to occupational therapists and Support workers etc. They will assist you with options that will offer you Choice and Control.

How do I find a support coordinator?

First, you need to ask your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or NDIA Planner for Support Coordination to be included in your plan. Not everyone will receive Support Coordination. Once your NDIS plan is approved, and if it includes Support Coordination, then the NDIA planner makes a request to your preferred Support Coordinator organizations.
