Are you eligible for disability support?

It can be overwhelming knowing where to start understanding your family’s eligibility and entitlements under the National Disability Scheme (NDIS). When we were first referred to the NDIS through a friend, we didn’t know exactly what we were eligible to receive for Rylan.

And I’m sure this is the same case for most families who start on their journey to receiving funding from the NDIS. Even simple terms like disability support and respite, at first we didn’t really understand. For anyone reading this, who has a young special needs child and thinking of contacting the NDIS, read on.

what is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a scheme of the Australian Government that funds costs associated with disability. This was legislated in 2013 and went into full operation in 2020. There are around 4.3 million Australians who have a disability.

So am I eligible?

To be eligible for the NDIS you need to be an Australian Citizen, a great resource can be found on the official NDIS website that provides a quick checklist for eligibility, you can view more here.
