Smoking & Vaping

Representing Tribe

Purpose

Tribe is committed to providing a safe, respectful and welcoming environment for every participant. Many participants have respiratory conditions, sensory sensitivities or personal preferences that make exposure to cigarette or vape smoke unpleasant or distressing. This guide outlines Tribe's expectations regarding smoking and vaping while representing the organisation.

What to do

  • Ensure your clothing, hands and breath are free from strong cigarette or vape odours before commencing your shift.

  • If you smoke or vape before work, allow sufficient time to minimise lingering odours before arriving.

  • Wash or sanitise your hands after smoking or vaping before providing support.

  • Only smoke or vape during an authorised break and well away from participants.

  • Dispose of cigarette butts and vaping waste responsibly.

  • Respect participant preferences and smoke-free environments at all times.

  • If you are wearing a Tribe uniform, ensure it remains clean, presentable and free from smoke or vape odours.

What Not to Do

  • Don't smoke or vape in a participant's home, yard or immediate surroundings.

  • Don't smoke or vape while transporting participants or in any vehicle being used to provide supports.

  • Don't smoke or vape while wearing your Tribe uniform.

  • Don't return from a smoking break smelling strongly of cigarette or vape smoke.

  • Don't leave cigarettes, vapes or related products visible or accessible to participants.

  • Don't assume participants will tell you if smoke or vape odours are making them uncomfortable.

Remember

Participants may have asthma, respiratory conditions, sensory sensitivities or simply prefer a smoke-free environment. Maintaining a fresh, professional presentation demonstrates respect for the people we support and helps create a positive experience for every participant.
