Purpose
Professional boundaries help create safe, respectful and positive relationships between support workers and participants. While building genuine rapport is encouraged, maintaining appropriate boundaries protects participants, support workers and Tribe, ensuring supports remain person-centred, ethical and professional.
What to do
Be friendly, respectful and professional at all times.
Support participants to achieve their goals while encouraging independence wherever possible.
Treat every participant with dignity, respect and without judgement.
Respect participant privacy and confidentiality at all times.
Maintain professional communication during and between shifts.
Politely redirect requests that fall outside your role or responsibilities.
Speak with the Tribe office if you are ever unsure whether something is appropriate.
What Not to Do
Don't share excessive personal information about yourself or your family.
Don't lend or borrow money or become financially involved with participants.
Don't accept money or expensive gifts from participants.
Don't give gifts without approval from the office.
Don't develop personal, financial or romantic relationships with participants.
Don't socialise with participants outside approved supports unless authorised by Tribe.
Don't use your relationship with a participant for personal benefit.
Don't communicate with participants in ways that could be considered inappropriate or unprofessional.
Remember
Building genuine, trusting relationships with participants is an important part of being a great Support Worker. The best relationships are those built on respect, professionalism and person-centred support. Professional boundaries protect participants, support workers and Tribe.
