Hygiene & Grooming

Purpose

Good personal hygiene and grooming are essential to providing safe, respectful and person-centred support. Many participants have medical conditions, sensory sensitivities or allergies that can make strong odours particularly uncomfortable. Maintaining good hygiene helps participants feel comfortable, respected and confident throughout their support.

What to do

  • Attend every shift clean and well groomed.

  • Wear freshly laundered clothing.

  • Maintain good personal hygiene throughout your shift.

  • Use deodorant and maintain fresh breath.

  • Keep your hands and fingernails clean and suitable for providing support.

  • Be mindful that some participants may be sensitive to strong perfumes, fragrances or other scents.

What Not to Do

  • Don't attend work with noticeable body odour or poor personal hygiene.

  • Don't wear clothing with persistent smoke, vape or other strong odours.

  • Don't wear excessive perfume, aftershave or heavily scented products.

  • Don't assume participants will tell you if something is making them uncomfortable.

  • Don't overlook the importance of personal hygiene when working closely with participants.

Remember

Participants may not always feel comfortable raising concerns about personal hygiene. Small things can have a significant impact on a participant's comfort, dignity and overall experience. Taking pride in your personal hygiene demonstrates professionalism and respect for the people we support. If you smoke or vape, please also refer to the Smoking & Vaping While Representing Tribe guide.
