Mobile Phone &

Technology Use

Purpose

Mobile phones are an important tool for communication and accessing work-related information during your shift. However, personal mobile phone use should be kept to a minimum and must never interfere with participant safety, engagement or the delivery of supports. This guide outlines Tribe's expectations for the appropriate and professional use of mobile phones while supporting participants.

What to do

  • Keep your mobile phone available in case you need to communicate with the Tribe office or respond to a work-related matter.

  • Use your phone for work-related purposes such as accessing ShiftCare, using maps, contacting the office or supporting participant goals.

  • Seek participant permission before using your phone for support-related purposes where appropriate.

  • Give participants your full attention during conversations, activities and supports.

  • If you need to respond to an urgent personal call or message, keep it brief and ensure the participant remains safe and supported.

  • Always protect participant privacy and confidentiality when using your phone.

What Not to Do

  • Don't spend unnecessary time texting, scrolling social media or making personal phone calls during your shift.

  • Don't allow personal mobile phone use to interrupt or delay participant supports.

  • Don't use your phone while walking with, transporting or actively supporting a participant if it compromises their safety.

  • Don't use your mobile phone while driving. If you need to make or answer a call, safely pull over before using your phone.

  • Don't take photos, videos or audio recordings of participants unless authorised and in accordance with Tribe policies.

  • Don't share participant information, photos or videos through your personal phone, messaging apps or social media.

  • Don't wear headphones or earbuds while providing support unless they are being used as part of the participant's support or you have approval to do so.

Remember

Participants deserve your full attention. While occasional personal phone use may be necessary, it should be brief, respectful and never interfere with providing safe, professional and person-centred support. Before using your phone, ask yourself:  "Is my phone helping the participant, or distracting me from supporting them?"
