Purpose
Support Workers build meaningful relationships with participants, and it is not uncommon for participants or their families to offer gifts or money as a way of saying thank you. This guide outlines Tribe's expectations to ensure professional boundaries are maintained and participants are protected from financial exploitation or undue influence.
What to do
Politely thank participants for their kindness if they offer a gift.
Accept only small, shareable gifts (such as chocolates or biscuits) where appropriate and in line with Tribe's expectations.
Advise the office if you are unsure whether a gift is appropriate to accept.
Encourage participants to express their appreciation through feedback or compliments to the office if they wish.
Immediately report any concerns regarding financial abuse, exploitation or pressure involving a participant.
What Not to Do
Don't accept money, cash, gift cards or vouchers from participants or their families.
Don't borrow money from participants or lend them money.
Don't ask participants to purchase items for you.
Don't accept expensive or valuable gifts without approval from the office.
Don't use your relationship with a participant for personal financial gain.
Don't pressure or influence participants to buy, donate or contribute towards anything for your personal benefit.
Remember
Professional boundaries protect everyone. While participants may genuinely wish to express their appreciation, accepting money or valuable gifts can create conflicts of interest and place both you and the participant at risk. If you're ever unsure whether something is appropriate, speak with the office before accepting it.
